The Central Military Hospital in Prague is a training and specialist treatment facility of the Czech Army which provides comprehensive healthcare at the level of a general hospital. The Central Military Hospital (ÚVN) examines the health of serving soldiers and those applying to join the army. Treatment and preventative care is provided not only to members of the army but also to others with health insurance or private patients. From 1994, when ÚVN became a contributory organisation and opened its doors to the civilian population, there has been a gradual increase in the number of patients examined and treated – both out patients and hospitalised patients.
The ÚVN has the character of a general hospital providing comprehensive care. With regards to its role as a military establishment there are areas in which it tries to specialise. One priority is emergency treatment; in the area of surgery attention is given to treating patients with multiple injuries including injuries to the central nervous system. The standard of the ÚVN is also confirmed by the fact that it is the hospital that cares for state officials of the Czech Republic.
